Opportunities from Online Music Lessons
Resound School of Music recently made the switch over to teaching online music lessons in response to the COVID-19 pandemic. And while we’re still figuring it the best ways to serve our students with online lessons, the feedback from our community so far has been overwhelmingly positive.
Despite the difficulties we are all experiencing, the current situation has opened many doors and opportunities for us to get creative in our teaching approach, so that our students can continue to succeed in learning to play music.
This reminds me of a famous quote:
“In the midst of every crisis, lies great opportunity.”
-Albert Einstein
Some Unexpected Benefits
In speaking with many of you, we’ve learned that online music lessons come with their own unique set of challenges, but also a unique set of benefits that we did not expect. Some of these include:
- Continuing to thrive while practicing social distancing
Whereas sports and most extracurricular activities have been cancelled for the season, online music lessons provide students with the valuable opportunity to continue learning music while staying safe and preventing the spread of illness. - Experiencing new and creative ways of learning
With so many resources now available online, the internet has made it easy for teachers to share music and additional learning materials with students in digital form. Online lessons also make it easy to record and play-back lessons for future reference. - Greater engagement and involvement from parents
Despite having no prior training themselves, many parents have now become a lot more involved in their child’s learning process. This increased engagement helps students to keep up with their practice commitments and remain more accountable.
- More independence and growth from students
With their lessons now being online, many students have had to “step-up” and become more independent in many ways. Numerous teachers have reported how impressed they were with how their students have matured and adapted to these changes.
