This month’s featured student is Lucas Thomas from Cloverdale! Lucas is 20 years old and a University student at SFU. He has been taking guitar lessons with his teacher Andrew Skepasts for the past 2 years, initially starting over Zoom during Covid, but now enjoying in person lessons for the past year.
Lucas has been working on classic rock and blues guitar. He’s been learning songs from guitarists such as Jimi Hendrix and Eric Clapton. In lessons, he’s also been focusing on learning the fretboard (scales and chords) and how to improvise/make up his own solos.
“One of my favourite aspects of Lucas is his open-minded approach to music. Even though we have focused on classic rock, he’s very open to a wide variety of music. We’ve played 80’s metal songs, classic rock songs from the 60’s and 70’s and even old school Delta Blues songs from guitarists like Tommy McClennan. This always keeps our lessons interesting, as there are many places we can go together!”
– Andrew
One of Lucas’ biggest achievements has been learning to play “Into The Void” by Black Sabbath. He learned the whole song, exactly as Tony Iommi plays it! It’s always tough to learn a song from front to back, including all the solos and everything. Tony Iommi isn’t the easiest player to emulate, but we think Lucas did a great job! He’s also come a long way in terms of his improv and making his own solos.
You can enjoy Lucas’ rendition of the song below, and skip ahead to 3:30 to watch him shred the guitar solo!
Interview with Lucas:
I’ve always enjoyed the guitar in different genres of music so I thought I’d try it out.
I have been with Resound for close to 2 years now.
I like Jimi Hendrix, Randy Rhoads, and Tony Iommi.
I would like to be able to write my own music.
He shapes the lessons around my interests.
Rock on, Lucas! Keep up the awesome work and we’re looking forward to see you shredding at one of our future recitals! If you know anyone who would love to learn to play electric guitar like Lucas, then get them to contact us for a free consultation.
